Obverse
On the obverse of the Proof American Eagle 1/4 oz Gold Coin is an image of Liberty created in 1907 by Augustus Saint-Gaudens. Considered the most beautiful American coin design ever, this vision of Liberty was groundbreaking in its day. Liberty is portrayed in full figure in front-facing relief as she walks toward the viewer. A ring of 50 stars encircles the field, rays of sunshine emerge from the background to frame Libertys figure, and the US Capitol Building is visible at her feet. Liberty walks confidently as she carries a torch in one hand and an olive branch in the other.
Reverse
The reverse of all Proof American Eagle Gold Coins features the depiction of a family of American bald eagles. In this 1986 design from Miley Busiek, you find a female eagle perched in the nest with a young hatchling. The female guards over the hatchling as a male eagle flies overhead. This design is exclusive to the American Eagle Gold Coin Series.
History
Proof American Eagle Gold Coins may share the same four weights as the bullion series, but the coins were introduced at different times. While all four weights debuted in 1986 in bullion, the proof series rolled out the weights in three years. The 1 oz coin was first 1986, the 1/2 oz coin second in 1987, and the 1/4 oz and 1/10 oz coins last in 1988.
