Proof American Eagle 1/2 oz Gold Coins were introduced by the US Mint in 1987. This came one year after the 1 oz gold coin debuted in 1986, and one year before the 1/4 oz and 1/10 oz gold coins were released to complete the proof collection. The fractional-ounce coins were produced by the Philadelphia Mint with P mint marks from 1987/1988 to 1993 and by the West Point Mint with W mint marks from 1994 onward.

Obverse

The obverse of all Proof American Eagle Gold Coins includes the vision of Lady Liberty in front-facing relief as she walks away from the national capital. In this design, Liberty moves toward the viewer with a torch in her right hand and an olive branch in her left hand while the US Capitol Building is depicted at her feet. It was created in 1907 by Augustus Saint-Gaudens and used on the $20 Gold Double Eagle until 1933.

Reverse

On the reverse face of Proof American Eagle 1/2 oz Gold Coins is a family of American bald eagles. Designed by Miley Busiek exclusively for this series in 1986, it depicts a family of eagles with the male flying over the nest as a female guards a hatchling in the nest.
