Obverse

On the obverse face of the Proof American Buffalo 1 oz Gold Coin, you will find the right-profile portrait of a stoic Native American figure. This design includes a date mark at the bottom of the bust and the word Liberty on the right edge of the design element.

Reverse

The reverse side of Proof American Buffalo 1 oz Gold Coins is a depiction of the American bison. This design uses Black Diamond as the inspiration for the buffalo standing on the dirt mount. Designer James Earle Fraser used Black Diamond, a resident bison at the Central Park Zoo in New York City in the early 20th century as a guide for his design.

History

American Buffalo Gold coins are inspired by the design James Earle Fraser created for the Buffalo Nickel. The Buffalo Nickel was available in the United States from 1913 to 1938. The design was authorized by the administration of President William Howard Taft in 1913. When the American Buffalo Gold Coin was introduced, it marked the start of 24-karat gold coining in the United States.
