Introduced in 1981, the Mexican Libertad Gold Coins from the Mexican Mint were one of the earliest gold bullion coins introduced. Though the series launched in 1981, it did not become a stable coin issued every year with regularity until 2002. There were several start-stops along the way in the history of this program. Right now, you can buy Mexican Libertad 1/4 oz Gold Coins online at Provident Metals.

Obverse

On the obverse face of the Mexican Libertad 1/4 oz Gold Coin is the modern version of the Mexican coat of arms. This national emblem includes a Mexican golden eagle battling with a serpent from its perch on a cactus. There is a cactus wreath in a half-moon shape to frame the seal from below and the words Estados Unidos Mexicanos inscribed above.

Reverse

The reverse side of Mexican Libertad 1/4 oz Gold Coins includes a depiction of a figure known as Winged Victory. Based on historic depictions of the goddess of victory, Victoria, this figure holds a wreath crown out in her right hand and a set of broken chains in her left hand. In the distant background field, you will notice two volcanic peaks. These peaks were named by the Aztecs as Popocatepetl and Iztaccihuatl.

History

Mexican Libertad Gold Coins debuted in 1981 with these 1/4 oz gold coins offered alongside a 1/2 oz and 1 oz gold coin. Issued for just one year, the series was on hold until 1991 when it returned with the added 1/10 oz and 1/20 oz coins. These five weights were produced from 1991 to 1994 and again suspended. All five were issued in 2000 and not in 2001. Since 2002, the series has finally gained a foothold as an annual-issue product.
