Chinese Panda Gold Coins debuted in 1982 from the Chinese Mint. The series debuted that year with 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz coins. In 1983, a 1/20 oz gold coin was added to round out the series at five coins in total. The series used Troy oz weights from 1982 to 2015 before switching to Grams as the official unit of measurement marked on the coins.

Obverse

On the obverse side of Chinese Panda 1 Gram Gold Panda Coins is the Hall of Prayer for Abundant Harvests. The exterior of the building is featured on this side along with inscriptions of the nation of issue in Mandarin and the date mark denoting the year of release. This structure, the largest in the Temple of Heaven Complex, appears on the obverse of the Chinese Panda Gold Coins each year.

Reverse

The reverse face of Chinese Panda 1 Gram Gold Coins includes a design representing the Giant Panda bear species. The bears are native to the central highlands of China and are easily recognizable because of the alternating patches of black-and-white fur on the bodies.

History

Chinese Panda 1/20 oz Gold Coins were replaced in 2016 by the Chinese Panda 1 Gram Gold Coins. The coin maintained the same 20 Yuan face value as its predecessor, with the weight dropping from 1.5552 Grams to an even 1 Gram and the diameter shrinking more noticeably from 13.92 mm to 10 mm.
