The Chinese Panda Gold bullion coin series debuted in 1982, making it one of the oldest coin programs of its type in the world. The series initially launched with 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz coins. In 1983, the Chinese Mint added the Chinese Panda 1/20 oz Gold Coins to the series. Right now, you can buy Chinese Panda 1/20 oz Gold Coins from random years at Provident Metals.

Highlights:

  • Arrives with protective flips!
  • Available from 1983 to 2015!
  • Contains 1/20 Troy oz of .999 pure gold.
  • Bears a face value of 5 Yuan or 20 Yuan fully backed by the Chinese government.
  • On the obverse is the Hall of Prayer for Abundant Harvests.
  • The reverse includes new images of the Giant Panda each year.
  • Please note you could receive several matching designs and dates if you purchase multiples.

Your purchase of a Chinese Panda 1/20 oz Gold Coins in this listing comes unsealed from the original packaging of the Chinese Mint. The mint typically offers its coins individually sealed inside of protective plastic. These coins were previously removed from those packages and are now available to you through this listing in a protective plastic flip.

Obverse

On the obverse of Chinese Panda 1/20 oz Gold Coins, you will find the same image every year. The Hall of Prayer for Abundant Harvests is the largest structure in the Temple of Heaven Complex and its outer facade features on the obverse of the Chinese Panda Gold Coins every year with the name of the nation in Mandarin and the date mark.

Reverse

The Chinese Mint made a name for this series by using new images of the Giant Panda species on the reverse each year. In this listing, the only way you will receive a Chinese Panda 1/20 oz Gold Coin with the same design and different date marks is if you receive 2001 and 2002 coins. This was the only time in program history the Chinese Mint repeated a design and it was so unpopular with investors that it never happened again.

History

Chinese Panda 1/20 oz Gold Coins were produced from 1983 to 2015 in this weight before being replaced by the 1 Gram gold coin. From 1983 to 2000, the face value of the Chinese Panda 1/20 oz gold coin was 5 Yuan, but face values were adjusted upward starting in 2001 with the 1/20 oz gold coin now valued at 20 Yuan.
