The Mercury Dime was designed by Adolph A. Weinman as part of a broader effort in the first two decades of the 20th century to redesign American coins. The first major coin redesigns came from Augustus Saint-Gaudens and Bela Lyon Pratt on the Gold Eagle denominations. This was followed by the Victor David Brennan redesign of the Penny and James Earle Fraser redesign of the nickel. In 1916, two designs from Weinman and one from Hermon Atkins MacNeil reimagined the dime, quarter, and half dollar.

Obverse

Winged Liberty is shown in left-profile relief on the obverse of the 90% Silver Mercury Dimes. Liberty wears a winged Phrygian cap on her head like the Roman messenger god Mercury, and there are inscriptions that read Liberty, In God We Trust, a W initial for Weinman, and the date mark.

Reverse

The Roman fasces was carried by lictors accompanying magistrates throughout the provinces of the Roman Empire as a symbol of their government authority and power. In this coin design, the Roman fasces represents war and justice, while being wrapped in an olive branch symbolizing an overriding desire for peace. Inscriptions on this face include United States of America, One Dime, and E Pluribus Unum. Mint marks are featured on specimens issued by the Denver Mint and West Point Mint, with the D or W marks featured between the base of the olive branch and the letter E from One on the reverse field.

History

The Mercury Dime was a popular circulation design and replaced the Charles E. Barber image of Liberty previously used on the dime from 1892 to 1916. The Mercury Dime design was the last bust of Liberty on this denomination as 1946 saw the introduction of a bust of President Franklin D. Roosevelt on the coin, a design that is still in use to this day.
