The introduction of the Liberty Gold Half Eagle design in 1839 brought with it the change from 5 D to note the face value to Five D. Liberty Gold Half Eagle coins produced from 1839 to 1866 do not have the national motto in the design on this side. Coins issued from 1866 to 1907 have In God We Trust on a ribbon held in the bald eagles beak.
