PEZ candy was, oddly enough, designed in 1927 by an Austrian inventor and scientist as a cure for smoking addictions. The candys name is a shortened version of the German word for peppermints: pfefferminz. It would be another two decades before the PEZ phenomenon reached American shores.

History
PEZ Wafers arrived in America in the 1950s during the post-war boom. Initially popular as a candy alone, by the 1990s PEZ was more famous for the variety of different dispensers the candies were housed in. Collecting the actual dispensers became a major hobby of cult followers of PEZ.
