The Lunar Series III collection is the popular follow up to two previous collections of its kind at the Perth Mint. The Lunar Series I program ran from 1996 to 2007 and featured a modest variety of gold and silver coins. The Lunar Series II collection launched in 2008 on the heels of that series with more designs available in both metals. When the Lunar Series III collection debuted in 2020, the silver and gold collections continued with robust offerings while an all-new 1 oz platinum coin debuted in the series.
Obverse
Queen Elizabeth II is found in the obverse design of the 2021 Australian Lunar Ox 1 oz Gold Coin. The image of the Queen featured here is the sixth-generation bust of the monarch with the George IV State Diadem Crown on her head. The design was created in 2015 by Jody Clark. The inscriptions featured on this side of the coin include Elizabeth II, Australia, 1 oz 9999 Au, and 100 Dollars.
Reverse
An adult ox is featured on the reverse field of 2021 Australian Lunar Ox 1 oz Gold Coins. The ox is a member of the bovine family and was first domesticated by humans around 4000 BCE and worked as plowers and haulers on farms. The design on this face of the coin includes an adult ox standing near bamboo stalks. The inscriptions include only Ox 2021 in English and the Chinese symbol for the ox.
History
The Lunar Series III collection is set to run from 2020 to 2031 at the Perth Mint. A global leader in lunar-themed collections, the Perth Mint introduces its coins along the exact same timeline as the Chinese Lunar Calendar, starting with the Year of the Mouse and concluding with the Year of the Pig.
