History

The white rhino species is split into two subspecies of its own: southern white and northern white. The southern white rhino is the most populous species of rhino in the world with 20,400 members alive in the wild. The northern white rhino is the single most endangered in the world with just two living females in captivity. The black rhino, as a whole, is also endangered, has four subspecies that include the south-central, south-western, east-African, and west-African. Black rhino population numbers dropped dramatically in the second half of the 20^th century from 70,000 in the 1960s to just 2,410 in 1995. Poaching was, and continues to be, a great threat to the long-term population of rhinos.
