Obverse

Walking Liberty was designed by Adolph A. Weinman in 1916 as part of a broad art contest by the United States Mint and Treasury Department to replace the designs on the nations dime, quarter, and half dollar. Weinmans Walking Liberty design with Liberty in left-profile relief striding toward the sun on the horizon was one of two winning designs he submitted and it graced the Walking Liberty Half Dollar from 1916 to 1947.

Reverse

The heraldic eagle of the United States was first designed in 1794 by Robert Scot, the 1st Chief Engraver of the United States Mint. It featured on a variety of different denominations in gold and silver throughout the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries. This latest design was modified for the US Mint by John Mercanti and includes the addition of a triangular cluster of 13 stars above the eagle and shield.

History

Weinmans Walking Liberty design was not his only winning image in 1916. His Winged Liberty was chosen for the US dime and resembled the Roman god Mercury so closely that the coin became known as the Mercury Dime. John Mercanti, the man who designed the modified heraldic eagle of the United States for the American Eagle Silver Coins went on to serve as 12th Chief Engraver of the United States, connecting him and Mr. Scot as men who both led the US Mint and designed its leading heraldic eagle emblem.
