The Royal Canadian Mounted Police is a modern law enforcement agency and no longer uses horses except in ceremonial processions and celebratory parades. Known as Mounties, the members of the force used to traverse between territories on horseback, hence the name. The RCMP is responsible for law enforcement on a federal level, such as guarding airports, and also on a provincial level in eight of the 10 Canadian provinces. Only Quebec and Ontario do not turn to the Mounties on a provincial law enforcement level.
