Obverse
Queen Elizabeth II features on the obverse of 2019 Canadian Lucky Dragon 1 oz Silver Coins. This right-profile portrait of the Queen is the fourth-generation bust of Her Majesty during her record-setting reign. The portrait shown here was created in 2003 by Susanna Blunt and shows the Queen without a crown for the first time during her reign. Inscriptions include Elizabeth II and 5 Dollars 2019. This face of the coin also has the Royal Canadian Mints radial lines in the background field.
Reverse
A Lucky Dragon design is found on the reverse of the 2019 Canadian Lucky Dragon 1 oz Silver Coins. This design showcases a Chinese dragon with its body curled into the shape of the number eight. At the center of the figure eight, you can see that the Lucky Dragon is clutching a pearl in one of its claws. Inscriptions on this side of the coin include Canada and 9999 Fine Silver 1 oz Argent Pur 9999.
History
The dragon has historically been associated with the Emperors of China as a symbol of power and military strength. In fact, the founder of the Han Dynasty, Liu Bang, claimed that he was conceived simply because his mother had a dream of a dragon.
The Royal Canadian Mint issues the Lucky Dragon coins with the same design on the reverse each year. Founded in 1908, the Royal Canadian Mint is the sovereign mint of Canada. Its original Ottawa Mint facility handles the production of bullion coinage, while the Winnipeg Mint produces circulation currency and banknotes.
