Obverse
On the obverse side of 2017 British Queens Beast Dragon 1/4 oz Gold Coins is a depiction of Queen Elizabeth II. The reigning monarch of England, Elizabeth II has been on the throne since 1952 and is shown here in a fifth-generation portrait for British coins. Designed in 2015 by Jody Clark, this design shows the Queen at the age of 89 with the George IV State Diadem Crown on her head.
Reverse
The reverse face of the 2017 British Queens Beast Dragon Gold Coin includes an image of the Red Dragon of Wales. The mythical dragon is shown supporting the royal arms of the final native Prince of Wales. The quartered shield has a single rampant lion in each one of the four quadrants.
History
The Red Dragon of Wales existed in Welsh mythology dating back over a thousand years, but came to the Royal Arms of England in the 15th century with the founding of the Tudor Dynasty by King Henry V. Queen Elizabeth II is connected to the Red Dragon of Wales not only as the reigning British monarch, but because it was the Queen who established the Red Dragon on the national flag of Wales, a nation within the United Kingdom.
