Obverse

Standing Liberty was designed in 1916 by Hermon Atkins MacNeil and features on the obverse of 2016-W American Standing Liberty Quarter 1/4 oz Gold Coins. The design captures a full-figure depiction of Liberty as she stands in the gap of a wall. The defensive nature of the design reflects the ongoing battle of World War I in Europe. The United States hoped to hold a neutral line and not be drawn into the foreign war. This design shows Liberty with a defensive shield in her left hand as she looks toward heraldic east (right) and the war in Europe. Her left-hand rests on the wall at heraldic west (left) with an olive branch. Inscriptions include Liberty, In God We Trvst, 2016, and Au 24k 1/4 oz. There is also a W mintmark, MacNeils last initial M, and 13 stars.

Reverse

An American bald eagle is shown gliding through the air on the reverse face of the 2016 American Standing Liberty Quarter 1/4 oz Gold Coins. This design also comes from MacNeil and includes inscriptions of United States of America, Quarter Dollar, and E Plvribvs Vnvm. The use of v in place of u in MacNeils inscriptions is accurate to the original US Quarters of the era.
