Obverse

On the obverse of Morgan Silver Dollar Coins, Lady Liberty is featured. In this classic portrait from George T. Morgan, she faces left while wearing a crown of wheat and a Phrygian cap. Surrounding the effigy are two rows of stars and inscriptions reading E PLURIBUS UNUM, 1885.

Reverse

The reverse of 1885 Morgan Silver Dollars features a bald eagle carrying arrows and an olive branch in its talons. The eagle is considered Americas national bird and has been featured on all versions of the countrys silver dollars. Youll find inscriptions on the reverse too that read UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, IN GOD WE TRUST, ONE DOLLAR.

History

In 1878, President Hayes vetoed a bill that would require the Treasury to purchase silver for the production of circulating silver dollars. But when Congress overrode the veto, the law was officially enacted. Known as the Bland-Allison Act, this bill was the impetus for the production of Morgan Silver Dollars, which officially commenced on March 11 of that same year. Production would continue until 1904, and then again in 1921 after the passage of the Pittman Act.
