The 1878 debut of the Morgan Silver Dollars featured coins from the Philadelphia Mint, Carson City Mint, and the San Francisco Mint. In 1879, the New Orleans Mint resumed production after a long hiatus during the US Civil War and the Reconstruction Era. Through 1904, the Philadelphia, San Francisco, and New Orleans Mints would continue to produce Morgan Dollars annually, with the Carson City Mint experiencing a coining hiatus from 1886-1888 and later closing in 1893.

Obverse

The obverse of the 1879-S Morgan Dollar features a bust of Lady Liberty, designed in 1878 by George T. Morgan. It features Liberty’s head in left-profile relief with a Phrygian cap at the back. She also wears a coronet crown and laurel wreath in her hair. The inscriptions read E PLURIBUS UNUM, LIBERTY, and 1879.

Reverse

On the reverse side of the 1879 Morgan Dollar Silver Coins, you’ll find Morgan’s rendition of the heraldic eagle. This eagle lacks a US national shield but depicts the front-facing bald eagle with wings spread, clutching the arrows of war and the olive branch of peace. Inscriptions here include UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, IN GOD WE TRUST, ONE DOLLAR, and the S mint mark.

History

Mintage figures for 1879 varied. Philadelphia produced 14.8 million coins, while San Francisco saw a slight drop to 9.110 million from the previous year. Carson City Mint experienced a significant decrease from 2.212 million to 756,000 in 1879. However, the addition of 2.887 million coins from New Orleans significantly boosted overall production in 1879 compared to 1878.
