The Barber Coinage is a rare example of one individual creating several different designs for American circulation currency. Charles E. Barber served as the 6th Chief Engraver of the United States Mint, succeeding his father William Barber in the role and holding his title for 37 years until his death. In 1891, Barber did the work himself to redesign the popular dime, quarter, and half-dollar denominations in circulation. Right now, $100 Face Value 90% Barber Silver Dimes in average circulated condition are available to you at Provident Metals.

Obverse

A vision of Liberty is featured on the obverse of 90% Barber Silver Dimes. This effigy in left-profile relief captures an effigy of Liberty with masculine figures and a wreath crown on the head. Inscriptions are simple and read United States of America and a date mark.

Reverse

The reverse of 90% Barber Silver Dimes comes with a simple design element. The denomination of One Dime is inscribed in the center of the design field with a wreath surrounding it. Barber Coinage dimes were produced by the Denver Mint, New Orleans Mint, San Francisco Mint, and the Philadelphia Mint. Philadelphia specimens feature no mint marks, but the former three options have mint marks of D, O, and S respectively on the reverse below the wreath.

History

Barber Coinage refers to the dime, quarter, and half-dollar coins Charles E. Barber created in 1892. His designs featured on these respective coins for just under the congressionally mandated 25 years, with Congress giving the mint and Treasury Department the authority to replace the designs a few years early in 1916. Barber Coinage dimes have 90% silver content and 10% copper with date marks ranging from 1892 to 1915.
