History

The design on this plate has served as Maine’s base plate since 1999, making it a symbol of the state’s identity. The previous state plate, issued in 1987, featured a red American lobster behind the serial number. These are the only two base plates for the state to feature imagery. It’s worth noting that the state now collaborates with the online Urban Dictionary to prevent potentially offensive personalized plates from being issued.
