Augustus Saint-Gaudens is widely regarded as one of the greatest American sculptors of all-time. Active as part of the Beaux-Arts generation, his images embodied the ideals of the American Renaissance and he played a vital role in the modernization of American coinage design in the early 20th century. Today, you have the opportunity to purchase his greatest design on the 1 oz Silver Saint-Gaudens Round from Provident Metals.

Highlights:

  • Available to ship with individual flips and tubes of 20!
  • Depicts the greatest American coin design of the 20th century!
  • Contains 1 Troy oz of .999 pure silver.
  • The obverse features Lady Liberty as designed by Saint-Gaudens.
  • On the reverse is an American bald eagle in a peaceful design image.

The image of Lady Liberty featured on these 1 oz Silver Saint-Gaudens Rounds was created by Saint-Gaudens between 1905 and 1907. It was intended for a high-relief strike on the $20 Gold Double Eagle coins, but it took upwards of 11 strikes for the US Mint to replicate the high-relief design and the coins, in high relief, were not deemed suitable for use in circulation. A flattened image went on to feature on the Gold Double Eagle until 1933 and now features on the American Gold Eagle bullion coin.

Obverse

On the obverse of 1 oz Silver Saint-Gaudens Rounds is Lady Liberty. Her figure is depicted in front-facing relief with a large torch clutched in her right hand and an olive branch of peace in her left hand. Liberty is free in this modern design with her long, flowing hair and robe blowing in the breeze as she walks forward. Rays of sunshine emerge from behind her figure and 50 stars encircle the design field.

Reverse

The design on the reverse of 1 oz Saint-Gaudens Rounds includes an American bald eagle at rest on an olive branch cluster. Inscriptions on this side include One Ounce .999 Fine Silver above the eagle, and SilverTowne below with a pick ax forming the T in SilverTowne.

History

Augustus Saint-Gaudens initially created medallions as his first foray into the art of coin design. President Theodore Roosevelt reached out to him personally to seek his assistance in modernizing American coin designs for the 20th century. Tragically, Saint-Gaudens would die from illness in 1907 just months before his beautiful Liberty design went into production and was released for circulation.
