The Morgan Dollar was a US $1 silver coin available from the United States Mint from 1878 to 1904 and again for one year in 1921. The coin featured images of Lady Liberty and the heraldic eagle of the United States. Designed by George T. Morgan, it has gone down in history with his name forever attached to the coins design. Today, you have the opportunity to buy 1 oz Silver Morgan Rounds online from Provident Metals.

Highlights:

  • Arrives with a protective plastic flip or a tube of 20 rounds!
  • Stunning depiction of the original Morgan Dollar designs!
  • Contains 1 Troy oz of .999 pure silver.
  • On the obverse is the left-profile image of Lady Liberty.
  • The reverse includes the heraldic eagle from the late-19th century.
  • Sunshine MintMark SI technology included (decoder lens not included).

George T. Morgan had hopes of working for the Royal Mint of England, but in the 1870s as he was seeking a job as a designer at the mint, the Royal Mint had no need for apprentices or new designers. The head of the Royal Mint recommended Morgan to the head of the United States Mint, and in 1876 he began an apprenticeship at the Philadelphia Mint location. His first major coin design for the mint is the one that is best remembered today as he created the US silver dollar design in 1878.

Obverse

On the obverse side of the 1 oz Silver Morgan Round in this product listing, you will find the left-profile portrait of Lady Liberty that was created by George T. Morgan. Created in a style common to the era, Liberty appears in a Greco-Roman design with a coronet crown and a wreath in her hair. The word Liberty is visible on the crown and E Pluribus Unum is inscribed above her head.

Reverse

The reverse face of the 1 oz Silver Morgan Round has the exact design Morgan created of the heraldic eagle for the Morgan Silver Dollar. The bird clutches arrows and an olive branch in its talons crossed below its figure. A wreath frames the bird from below and inscriptions on this side include United States of America and One Troy oz .999 Fine Silver.

History

The Morgan Silver Dollar was designed in 1878 and marked the restart of silver dollar production in the United States. The Seated Liberty Silver Dollar was halted in 1873 and no new silver dollars were produced for circulation until 1878. The Morgan was produced annually from 1878 to 1904, at which point the production of new silver dollars again ceased until 1921. When silver dollars returned, the Morgan design was struck again for most of 1921, with the new Peace Dollar design introduced in the closing days of December 1921.

Ordering

These 1 oz Silver Morgan Rounds come with Sunshine MintMark SI technology for authentication, but the decoder lens is sold separately. Each round is packaged individually in a protective flip or together in tubes of 20.
