Obverse

A stoic Native American figure is depicted on the obverse side of the 1 oz Silver Buffalo Round. James Earle Fraser designed the Buffalo Nickel imagery in 1913 to replace the existing five-cent piece design on the coin. It was one of the first major denominations in US circulation to feature images of indigenous figures and culture. The figure on this side of the round is said to have been created by blending together the facial features of three existing indigenous leaders of the early 20^th century. The only inscriptions on this side of the round are Liberty and SMI.

Reverse

The American bison is the largest land mammal on the North American continent and is a powerful beast that was revered in indigenous cultures as a provider of many things. The 1 oz Silver Buffalo Round includes a left-profile image of the bison standing on a small mound of dirt. Fraser used Black Diamond, a bison residing at the Central Park Zoo in New York City, as inspiration for his design. Inscriptions on this side read 1 Troy oz .999 Fine Silver.

History

James Earle Fraser grew up in the Upper Midwest and explored the plains of the Dakotas with his father in the late-19^th century. These places were the inspiration for his designs as he launched his art career. The Buffalo Nickel design was approved by the Taft Administration and used on the nickel from 1913 to 1938.
