Modern human civilizations like to think they were the first to create massive sculptures and tower structures, but countless other civilizations of bygone eras have achieved great feats of their own. For example, the Mexica people of the Aztec Empire managed to carve their calendar system into a massive chunk of basalt rock that weighs more than 54,200 lbs and it survives to this day. Today, you have an opportunity to purchase 1 oz Silver Aztec Calendar Bars online at Provident Metals.

Highlights:

  • Arrives with protective plastic flips or mint tubes of 20 bars!
  • Incredibly detailed design of the Aztec sun stone!
  • Contains 1 Troy oz of .999 pure silver.
  • On the obverse is Cuauhtemoc.
  • The reverse includes the Aztec sun stone.

The Aztec sun stone is housed in the National Anthropology Museum in Mexico City and comes from the post-classical period of Mexica culture at the height of the Aztec Empires power. The stone sculpture was buried in what is now Mexico City in 1521 by the Aztecs as their capital city fell to invading Spanish conquistadors and wasnt unearthed until December 17, 1790, during renovations to the Mexico City Cathedral.

Obverse

On the obverse side of 1 oz Silver Aztec Calendar Bars is the portrait of Cuauhtemoc. Elected as the final emperor of the Aztec Empire in 1520, Cuauhtemoc inherited an empire that was crumbling under the repeated attacks of Spanish conquistadors and the betrayal of neighboring indigenous people, not to mention the devastation of European diseases to which the people of Central America had no natural immunity.

Reverse

The reverse of 1 oz Silver Aztec Calendar Bars includes a recreated image of the Aztec sun stone. The design includes a central disk with three rings of designs around it and symbols along the edge of the design that help the viewer determine which day and month it is on the solar calendar of the Mexica people.

History

The Aztec sun stone was more than a means of visually tracking the Aztec solar calendar, it was also a visual manifestation of the connection between Mexica ideology, the importance of violence and warfare, and the cosmic cycles. The Aztec rulers could use this visual to maintain control over the people of the empire.
