History

Womens suffrage movements began in earnest after 1848 when the Seneca Falls convention adopted a Declaration of Sentiments that called for equality among the sexes, including the right for women to vote. Western territories and new states in the Union were among the first to call for a new national law securing the right for women to vote, but it wouldnt happen until 1919 when the House and Senate passed what would become the 19^th Amendment. Changing the constitution requires a minimum number of states to ratify, and that minimum was reached on August 18, 1920, when Tennessee ratified the amendment. The 19^th Amendment was formally adopted on August 26, 1920.
