History

Since 1988, proof American Gold Eagles have been minted in all four weights each year, except for 2009 when no proof coins were produced. The 1 oz Proof American Gold Eagle, though the first in the series, often boasts the lowest mintage among the four weights. The initial 446,290 proofs in 1986 dwindled to 87,133 by 1988, and as of 2013, approximately 24,710 1 oz proofs were struck.

Produced exclusively at the West Point Mint in New York, each 1 oz Proof American Gold Eagle bears a distinctive W mint mark.
