History

Since the early 20^th century, many states have treated cannabis as a problematic and even poisonous drug. By the 1920s, prohibitions were put in place, and in the following decade, all states were regulating the plant. Restrictions only grew harsher with the passage of the Controlled Substances Act in 1970, which prohibited both the recreational and medicinal use of cannabis. However, the tides have slowly begun to shift, and in 2012 Colorado and Washington became the first states to legalize the recreational use of cannabis.
