The Silla kingdom ruled much of the Korean peninsula in various stages throughout the course of 1,000 years beginning in the 1st century BC and stretching into the 10th century AD. Some of the most important artifacts from the Silla kingdom date between the 5th and 7th centuries and take the form of various gold crowns. Obverse

The Cheon-ma chong gold crown features on the obverse of the 1 oz 2020 South Korean Gold Crowns from KOMSCO. The primary element of the design field includes a front-facing view of the Cheon-ma chong crown itself. The real-life crown stands 32.5 centimeters in height and has three prongs on it that form the Chinese symbol for the mountain. Also included in this design element are the images of the Heavenly Horse, a nod to the crowns discovery in the Heavenly Horse Tomb, and the swooping wings of a bird. The inscriptions on this side include Gold Crown 2020.

Reverse

For the reverse design of 1 oz 2020 South Korean Gold Crowns, KOMSCO features a stylized depiction of Sam-jok-o. Known as Samjogo in Korean, the image is that of a three-legged crow. The design field features the swooping tail of the bird, with its figure in the center. In many East Asian cultures, Samjogo is seen as a symbol of the sun and relates to the sun god. The ancient Goguryeo people of Korea believed the three-legged crow lived in the sun. Inscriptions on this side of the gold medals read Fine Gold 999, 1 oz, Republic of Korea, and KOMSCO.

History

The Crowns of Silla number six in total, with many discovered in the 1970s. Three of these golden crowns are considered national treasures in South Korea, while the other three are more broadly labeled as treasures. The Cheon-ma chong was discovered in 1973 in the Heavenly Horse Tomb and is said to have belonged to either King Soji or King Jijeung.
